テレビで刑事ドラマを見てて、犯人が分かったとき、「やっぱり！」って叫んだことある？

Have you ever shouted like “I knew it!”, when you were watching a detective drama on TV and you found out who the criminal was?

This time, I will introduce how to say ” I knew it” in Japanese.
As you saw it in the example sentence above, “I knew it” would be やっぱり “yappari”.
Let’s look at more examples :)
例 rei example
「だーれだ！」 “daare da!”
*後ろから目隠し* *ushiro kara mekakushi*
「えー、みさかな？」 “ee, misa kana?”
「正解！」 “seikai!”
「やっぱり（笑）」”yappari (wara)”
“Guess who!”
*blindfolded from behind*
“Eh, Misa, I guess?”
“Correct!”
“I knew it lol”

「ねえ、どうだった？あの映画、面白かった？」
“nee, dou datta? Ano eiga, omoshirokatta?”
「いや、やっぱりつまんなかったよ。」
“iya, yappari tsumannakatta yo.”
“Hey, how was it? Was that movie interesting?”
“Nah, it was boring just as I thought. (I knew it would be boring.)”

「やっぱりってどういうこと？知ってたの？」
“yappari tte douiu koto? Shitteta no?”
「うんん、ただの女の勘だよ。」
“unn, tada no onna no kan da yo.”
“I knew it!”
“What do you mean you knew it? Did you (actually) know it?”
“No, just women’s intuition.
You can also say 男の勘 otoko no kan “male intuition”. ;)
Or just 勘 kan. “a hunch”.

E.g 「どうやって答えが分かったの？」
“douyatte kotae ga wakatta no?”
「勘で当てたんだ。」
“kan de ateta n da.”
“How did you get the answer right?”
“Just a hunch. / It popped into my head.”
＊当てる ateru “to get it right”
「やっぱり」にはもう一つの意味があることに注意！
Be careful that
“yappari” has another meaning.
It means “I’ve changed my mind” or “after all“.
例 rei E.g
*レストランでメニューを見てる*
*resutoran de menyuu wo miteru*
「じゃあ、そばにする！ あ、やっぱりラーメンにする・・・。」
Jaa, soba ni suru! A, yappari raamen ni suru…
*At the restaurant looking at the menu*
“Alright, then, I’ll order Soba! Ah, I’ve changed my mind after all. I’ll get Ramen.”

“Ashita wa kinyoubi?”
「うん。あ、やっぱり木曜日！ごめん。」
“Un. A, yappari mokuyoubi! Gomen.”
“Is tomorrow Friday?”
“Yeah. Oh, wait, it’s Thursday (after all). Sorry.”

You can also say “やっぱ yappa” instead of “やっぱり yappari”.
